Snakey probably crawled into the engine compartment when the car was parked, attracted to the heat of a cooling engine, perhaps. It doesn't look like he got caught in a belt or anything like that ... he would have got sucked in and mangled beyond what those pictures show. It's likely the "pop" was when the engine got so hot he exploded ... poor snakey got cooked.

It looks photoshopped to me, the shadows don't quite look right. Also, as someone pointed out already, it's not on the highway like the story says. Whoever 'shopped it though really took some care to get the angles right in all the photos.
